The Mic Isn't a Mask

By Khing Jus Wurk (Frank D. Monroe) Some people hear a microphone and imagine a character, a performance, or a perfectly rehearsed answer. I think about what happens when you stop trying to sound perfect and start trying to say something worth hearing. My work moves through music, storytelling, entertainment, training and the experiences that shaped my perspective. Those parts of me don't always fit into a caption. A conversation gives them room. It also gives someone else the chance to challenge my thinking, teach me something or simply be heard. That's the standard I want to bring to the microphone: questions over performance. I can be direct without pretending I have every answer. I can speak from experience without claiming that my perspective is the only one. WURKXCREW is the community and creative identity I'm building around that kind of work. No costume. No borrowed story. Just the responsibility to keep showing up as myself. I AM WURK. WE ARE WURKXCREW. IAmWurk.com | @KhingJusWurk

The Child Beneath the Defenses: Why I Wrote Shattered Control

The Child Beneath the Defenses

The Child Beneath the Defenses: Why I Wrote Shattered Control

There is a difference between defending every choice and understanding why you learned to defend yourself.

I wrote Shattered Control: Part One to look at the child beneath those defenses. The story reaches back to my childhood, to the search for belonging and the ways I learned to protect myself before I understood what those habits might cost.

I'm not writing a victory speech, and I'm not asking anyone to excuse every choice. I'm telling my account and trying to understand how those experiences shaped me, so the next part of the story can be written with greater awareness.

Some names and details in the memoir are changed or combined to protect privacy. The book is the beginning of a longer story, not a claim that every wound is healed.

If you want to read the beginning, visit IAmWurk.com or explore the Kindle, paperback, and hardcover editions.

I AM WURK. WE ARE WURKXCREW.

Content note: childhood trauma, family instability and violence are among the book's themes.

My Sound Doesn't Need a ZIP Code

By Khing Jus Wurk | WURKXCREW

People are quick to ask where a sound comes from. That's a fair question. But I don't think the answer should become a box an artist has to live inside.

Red Hook, Brooklyn shaped how I listen, how I pay attention to words, and how I recognize grit when I hear it. The Atlanta area is part of the life I'm building now. Both places matter to me. Neither one needs me to imitate somebody else's idea of what that city should sound like.

I make music from experience. Some of it is direct. Some of it asks questions. Some of it is simply a chance to put energy into the room and let the listener decide what stays with them.

That's what creative independence means to me. Not pretending I came from nowhere, and not borrowing a personality to prove I belong somewhere. I can respect my influences without becoming their copy.

WURKXCREW connects the different ways I create: music, performance, writing, and the work behind all of them. This music is one part of that larger picture.

If you hear something in the work that connects with your own journey, tell me what it is. I'd rather start a real conversation than chase a label.

I AM WURK. WE ARE WURKXCREW.
